Ghost Flowers: The Lost Scents Science Is Bringing Back to Life

When a flower goes extinct, its scent is supposed to vanish with it. No herbarium, however carefully kept, preserves a smell; the molecules dissipate, the perfume of the living plant becomes a thing no nose will ever know again. For most of human history that was simply the end of the story. It no longer is.

The most quietly astonishing development in perfumery this decade is not a new note or a new house but a new question: what if a scent that died could be brought back? In 2017, synthetic biologists at the Boston company Ginkgo Bioworks — founded by a handful of MIT scientists — partnered with the Harvard University Herbaria and took tiny samples from flowers long believed extinct. From the dried, century-old specimens they coaxed out fragments of ancient DNA, sequenced them, and went hunting for the genes that build scent: the sesquiterpene synthase enzymes that sit behind a great many floral aroma molecules. Those gene sequences were printed afresh, slipped into yeast, and grown — until the yeast began, improbably, to exhale the ghost of a smell no living person had ever breathed.

Fourteen flowers were attempted. Six survived the process intact enough to become something wearable, and those six became the founding collection of Future Society, the fragrance brand born from Arcaea, Ginkgo's consumer spin-off. The reconstructed molecules were handed to a trio of formidable noses — Jérôme Epinette of Robertet, the perfumer behind Byredo's Gypsy Water; Daniela Andrier of Givaudan, who composed Prada Candy; and her colleague Olivia Jan — and asked to do the work no algorithm can: to build a perfume around a fragment, to imagine the rest of a flower from a single resurrected chord. The results, with names like Solar Canopy, are not science exhibits. They are perfumes, finished and seductive, that simply happen to carry a heartbeat from the deep past.

It is tempting to file this under novelty, and tempting would be wrong. What biotech is offering perfumery in 2026 is something the craft has wanted for two hundred years: access to scents that were impossible — too rare, too fragile, too protected, or, in this case, too gone. The wider trade has felt the shift all year. Lab-grown naturals, sustainable aroma molecules grown in fermentation tanks rather than stripped from endangered groves, regenerated extinct notes — these are no longer fringe curiosities but the most talked-about frontier in the houses that take materials seriously. The romance of the rare ingredient, for so long bound up with scarcity and its costs, is quietly being rewritten.

Nowhere is that rewriting bolder than at Osmo, the company Alex Wiltschko spun out of Google's research labs to teach machines to smell. Wiltschko's model learned to predict how a molecule will smell from its structure alone — a kind of map of odour space — and from that map his team has done something that still sounds like a conjuring trick. They call it scent teleportation: a spectrometer breaks a real smell down into its component molecules, software encodes it as data, and a printer rebuilds it elsewhere from raw aroma chemicals. Their first complete success was the smell of a fresh-cut summer plum, captured and recreated with no plum present. Along the way Osmo has patented entirely new materials — Glossine, Fractaline, Quasarine — and now offers houses an AI-assisted path from brief to first sketch in moments.

For the connoisseur, the instinct is suspicion, and it is a healthy one. We love perfume partly because it is handmade, because the saffron was picked at dawn and the orris waited six years; we are right to ask whether a molecule born in a fermentation tank or sketched by a model can carry a soul. But consider what is actually happening here. The resurrected flowers are not synthetic approximations of nature — they are nature, reconstructed from its own genetic instructions, more faithful in their way than any chemist's homage. And the perfumer still stands in the middle of it all, deciding what to do with the gift. The machine can hand you a chord no one has smelled in a hundred years. It cannot tell you what it means.

That is the quiet thrill of this moment. Perfume has always been a way of holding on to things that pass — a season, a person, a place that no longer exists except on skin. Now it can hold on to a flower the earth itself let go. To wear one of these scents is to carry a small act of resurrection, a breath of something the world had written off as lost. The bottle has always been a kind of time machine. We are only now learning how far back it can reach.
